There are days for everything now. Today is International Goof Off Day. Tell your boss or your teacher or the we’ens that it’s International Goof Off Day! That will work, right? When I came across this I wondered about the ‘International’ bit. Surely ‘Goof Off’ is an American slang term for neglecting duties and obligations? Then I wondered about the ‘Goof Off’ bit. In my extensive research, I could find no information to suggest this day is a ‘National’ day or restricted to Americans so I guess if you need an excuse to skive or disappear today I have just handed it to you on a plate…err…in a paper. I did read it was created by an influential someone who was very overworked and stressed. Most likely, they finally lost it, and took a day to just goof off. But you can’t believe all you read and I have my concerns it may have been created by someone who is always goofing off but then I guess they would have called it Goof Off Week, or month, or……anyway whether it’s an international or national day or only for those in the U.S.ofA I like the idea behind it. I think everyone should have a goof off day an odd time, a bit like a micromini holiday just to do whatever you please without fretting over the to-do list. Planning it around a certain date set by someone who was fed up in 1911 is taking it to an extreme but perhaps you could pick your own date, a birthday or a date set aside to celebrate you reaching a certain goal or finishing a project. It could be a way to celebrate your achievements. It doesn’t have to be a whole day, just a few hours to allow yourself the stress free space to spend a little time doing what you want to do. Can you envision what it would be like? I’m not going to write a list of suggestions like titled 52 things you can do on International Goof Day. I’m sure you will figure it out for yourself. Just pick something that makes your heart sing, set the time aside and do it. It’s as simple as that.
I think it’s important to have a goof off day now and then, a day (or even a few hours) absent of stress and pressure. Mental health needs attention just like everything else in our lives!
International Goof Day might not be as mad as it sounds. It’s definitely not as mad as a few other ones in March like the one celebrated tomorrow. It’s called Near Miss Day. I’m not quite sure what you are supposed to do to celebrate it but it commemorates the day a huge asteroid, the size of a mountain, nearly missed hitting the earth on March 23, 1989. Had it collided with the Earth, it’s affect on the planet would have been catastrophic. Since then, there have been other near misses. Near misses with large, potentially life threatening galactic objects happens on an infrequent basis. It is believed a large asteroid collided with the earth and caused the extinction of dinosaurs. Scientists believe it is only a matter of time before another catastrophic collision with Earth. But, don’t worry. The odds are it will not happen for a long, long time. Are you still reading? Bet you are away planning what you are going to do on International Goof Off Day or ringing a date on the calendar to set aside some precious time to relax and enjoy…when you still can. Have a happy International Goof Off Day.
