Have you ever imagined what your life would be like if you packed up all your belongings and moved to a brand new life? Where would you go? Would you live beside the ocean or in between the shadows of the rolling mountains? Would you move to a city that never sleeps or to a sleepy village in a warm climate? Does it scare you to start over or do something different with your life?
The very thought of starting over, selling up or downsizing while letting go of sentimental possessions is enough to scare the ‘Be Jayus’ out of anyone! The good news is that we don’t have to move lock stock and barrel to start over.
For most of our lives we spend much of our time being and doing what we were supposed to do, what we need to do, and what we are expected to do we lose our authenticity and a few dreams along the way. If you get to a point where you stop long enough to ponder and ask yourself, is this where I want to be for the rest of my life and the answer is no then perhaps you may have to put the ball in motion and direct it towards your goal or to that ‘something else’ that is out there for you to do, try or see.
Through our lives we can become programmed to be sensible, reasonable, safe, and responsible. Change of any kind becomes uncomfortable and usually feared. Even when we are ready for a change there is always a point when second thoughts start to niggle you and whisper maybe it is a mistake? What if it doesn’t work out? Perhaps I’m going through a mid-life crisis? This is very much like the process we encounter when we are faced with other types of changes in our lives?
Sounds a little scary perhaps but starting over is something we can do every single day. Thankfully, we are all different. One man’s nightmare is another man’s dream come true. But what is important is that even if you don’t want to go bungee jumping or climb Kilimanjaro you don’t want to wind up sitting in a chair regretting what you didn’t do!
Life is not so short any more. We have been blessed with additional quality time and it’s an opportunity for us to start over especially if we have a burning desire to make changes in our lives and improve or succeed an unfulfilled dream or goal!
So how do you get to that place where you can start over or at least embrace and welcome change? Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
First you need to carve out a piece of quiet relaxed uninterrupted time for yourself. (Now there’s a change in itself, right?) Think about what you would like to do. Your dream muscle might be a little weak at first but like any exercise program with practice you’ll be dreaming big in no time.
Take time to look at your life and how satisfied you are with all the areas in your life. You can’t change anything if you don’t know what it is you want to change. Find a couple of areas of your life you’d like to focus on. Take action.
While you’re reviewing your life make sure to remember all the amazing things you have accomplished over the years. Be patient with yourself and take small and consistent steps.
As Carl Brand wisely said, “Though one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”
